REFLECTING ON MIDEA JOURNEY
BACKGROUND
Transitioning from a background in film photography and production, where I specialized in visual effects, I joined the MIDEA program to explore the fusion of art and technology from a fresh perspective. My previous work focused on creating visually compelling after-effects videos, but I wanted to move into interaction design to deepen my understanding of how design can be both aesthetically engaging and practically effective.
EXPECTATIONS & KEY LEARNING EXPERIENCE
While I initially expected to focus on individual technical skills, the most significant learning experience for me has been group collaboration. I learned to adapt my ideas through active listening and reflecting on peer approaches, which often prompted me to revise and strengthen my own designs. This teamwork was crucial in understanding how different perspectives can uncover both positive impacts and potential shortcomings.
TOP 3 PRACTICAL SKILLS
Comprehensive Research – I developed skills in conducting various types of research, from client and user studies to sourcing information through methods like ethnography, surveys, and structured interviews.
Testing – I gained hands-on experience with usability testing, using techniques such as think-aloud protocol, observation, and other methods to improve user interaction with designs.
Prototyping – As a cross-disciplinary student, I quickly became proficient in Figma, learning to create prototypes and leverage testing to iterate effectively.
TOP 3 THEORETICAL CONCEPTS
Double Diamond – This principle has helped structure my design process, providing clarity at each stage of problem-solving and solution-finding.
User-Centered Design – I embraced this concept fully, placing user empathy and satisfaction at the forefront of every design decision.
Information Architecture – Understanding the importance of hierarchy in information architecture has been crucial in organizing and presenting information effectively.
